Cracker Jack memories...

While I have always liked Cracker Jacks,
my most vivid memories are of the commercial I saw repeatedly when I was about 8
or 9. It was the one with the kid going down the street... it was wet... and
running a stick along a wrought iron fence, crossing the street to a park which
had a kiosk selling magazines, candy, and whatnot. The old guy with a really
great face takes the kid's order for Cracker Jacks and the kid pulls out all the
stuff from his pocket... including some money, a jack, and eventually a live
frog. The deal is sealed and the kid goes off with the Cracker Jacks.
The lyrics for the theme song went something like, What do you want when you
gotta have something and it's gotta be sweet, AND IT'S GOTTA BE A LOT, and ya
only have a dime. Whadya get?... Cracker Jacks! Candy coated popcorn, peanuts
and a prize... that's what you get in Cracker Jacks!"
That commercial was 40 years ago and it is still with me in great detail.
Advertisers today might learn a thing or two about the persistence of memories
from commercials like that! Thanks for the memories. ~ Dan from Texas
I've always loved Cracker Jack (though
I've always called them Cracker Jacks). When I was young, I'd get so excited on
those special occasions when my Mom would buy me a box. I'd rip open the top and
shove my little hand down inside to feel around for the special toy surprise.
After retrieving the booty, I'd shove tiny handfuls of the crunchy caramel
covered popcorn into my mouth as I applied my newly acquired temporary tattoos
to my arm (if I was lucky enough to get them!)
I especially liked to dig around for the
peanuts in the box. If they sold Cracker Jacks peanuts by themselves, I may
never have tried another treat because my favorite would have been clearly
decided already. The peanuts tended to find their way to the bottom of the box,
so that, too, took some digging.
As I grew older, my hand grew larger.
Getting the best stuff first was no longer a matter of simply reaching down to
the bottom of the box and pulling out the peanuts or the prize. Growing older, I
grow to understand that the best things are worth waiting for.
I'm not gonna lie and say that in my
adult years I haven't stretched a couple fingers into the box to try and snag
the prize now and then. But even then, I've been happy to find those caramel
coated peanuts at the bottom of the box once I've finished the rest. Yeah, good
things are worth waiting for. ~ Chad from Oklahoma
