Circus Peanuts memories...

I remember when I was little my mom
would always set out a big bubbled glass bowl just full of circus peanuts.
Always after my piano lesson. I would rush through the chords, rush through
chopsticks and boogie woogie, pushing my little fingers in hopes that the
circus peanuts wouldn’t disappear before I was done.
And what a reward they were. I remember
popping one into my mouth and just smiling, my piano teacher laughing. Now
whenever I eat one I can feel my old living room, I can see the overflowing,
orange bowl. Whenever I eat one I always smile. ~ Mark from Pennsylvania
I am named after my Grandmother, Edith,
and I still have memories of her when she came to visit our family of ten in
Washington state from where she lived in California. It was the 1960's and when
she flew to visit us, she always brought Circus peanuts in her suitcase. She
visited every summer!
Mom and Dad never did buy us that candy
while I was growing up and I believe it was because we looked so forward to
Grandmas bringing us a bag or two to share.
I buy them now, and my memories of
Grandma are as fresh as if she were coming tomorrow bringing me a bag all for
myself! ~ Edith from Washington
Growing up, we did not have candy in the
house. My sister and I always looked forward to visiting my grandmother every
Sunday evening after church. She made the best fried chicken, mashed potatoes,
and black eyed peas, AND she had a set of canisters full of candy. The smallest
one held Circus Peanuts. We usually picked circus peanuts to eat since they were
big and chewy.
One morning, after we had spent the
previous evening at my grandmother's house, my sister noticed something on the
bottom of her shoe. It was a smushed Circus Peanut! She was so excited to see it
that she peeled it off and ate it! My grandmother is now almost 93 years old,
and still carries Circus Peanuts in the house. We laugh each time we eat one
remembering my sister and her excitement over the squashed Circus Peanut. ~
