Caramel Squares memories...

Kraft Caramel advertisment

Caramel squares remind me of my grandfather. Every time I visited my grandparents house, we'd walk down to the nearby bay and feed the ducks together. My grandfather always had a caramel or two in his pocket, without fail. He never forgot. If I went out during the day and come back to the house, he'd place one on the pillow of the bed in the guest room or hide some around the house and tell me I was on a treasure hunt. My grandfather died when I was just 12, but its a memory I'm fond of. So whenever I have those squares, I think of him. ~ Christine from New York

I remember as a child my mom would occasionally buy caramels to make a desert with. She was a great cook and always seemed to make something delicious out of very little. Even though we didn't have much money, she would always give my sister and I a few of the candies before she made the desert with them. It was a very special treat for us. We would then go outside and play and try to make our caramels last but that usually didn't happen. Good memories. ~ Susan from Illinois

Every fall when I was a child (I'm 25 now), my mom would make caramel apples for my elementary school Halloween carnival. I remember going to the store with her where she'd buy around twenty or thirty pounds of apples and then about five or ten pounds of caramel squares to melt. The normal plastic bags weren't big enough to hold that many caramels, so she'd use a full-sized brown paper grocery bag and fill it up.

It always seemed surreal to me, having that much candy sitting right next to me on the ride home, and it was absolute torture having that huge bag of candy in the house, knowing I couldn't eat it. My mom always had to hide the bag until she made the caramel apples, because she knew I'd eat the caramel squares if she left them sitting out. Sometimes she'd give me one or two, but I remember thinking that it was a big waste to put the caramel on apples, when the caramels tasted so much better by themselves. ~ Ryan from Utah
