Bottle Caps memories...
Bottle Caps is one candy I will always remember!! When my sister and I were young, she is four years older than I am, Saturday mid-mornings held a special time for the two of us. While our mother was/is very protective and did not give us much space each and every Saturday we would be allowed to take a walk up over the hill to a small privately owned store, Tatersalls, to spend the money our father gave us without fail for that trip. I can never forget going in with what today would not buy much candy at all but coming out with a little brown lunch bag full of penny candies. Of course some were 5 cents or 10 cents but they were well worth it. We would stand there and pick out exactly what we wanted to buy. Boy was that grand!! We would take our time and perhaps even try a different kind rather than our normal. Then we would proudly go to the register and pay those kind people. You could guarantee one candy that would always go in our bag was Bottle Caps and to this day I still love those little candies. Whenever my children, who are close to the age my sister and I were at the time, get those in their trick or treat bags I always tell them this story. They seem to get the whole concept of they were special times with special people as my father has passed away just three years ago in April unexpectedly and my sister was in a near fatal car accident the March after his passing. Her chances of living were 10% after her car ran into the back of a parked roll back tow truck shattering her face and causing her brain to swell. They managed to re-construct her face but most of her memories are gone, including our little Saturday excursions when we would walk hand in hand to the little store to buy our candy. Our father who used to keep memories like that alive being gone too has made the memory even more valuable to myself. So as I can I share it with my family so each time they eat a Bottle Cap they will think of the story and all of the love it involved. Some day hopefully they will have a story of their own to go with a candy as well. ~ Patti from Virginia |
