BB Bats memories...

Oh how I loved to lick on B B Bats. My
favorite flavor was banana closely followed by chocolate. I grew up in a small
town in Connecticut. There was a store near our middle school called the "Smoke
Shop" that carried a great selection of candy.
Either before school, or afterwards if I
didn't have to catch the bus home, I'd often go there and buy a Charms cherry
flavored lollipop or a pack of Razzles (were they candy or were they gum?), but
always left with a banana or chocolate flavored BB Bat. I would lick these
little delights until my tongue started to bleed... and not stop until I was
finished.
It's been quite a while since I enjoyed a
banana BB Bat, I think that I'll order some of them now! ~ Liz from California
I'm 54 and my brother is 18 months younger than me. Our dad would take us to the old country store and we knew
what we would spend our pennies on. He liked the banana flavor and I liked strawberry. I still eat them today when I can find them. In the summer we
would put them in the back window of our dad's car and get them really soft before we ate them. ~ Debbie from Missouri
In the early 70's, my family moved back to my Mom's hometown in southwest Oklahoma. I was 7 yrs old. The 5&Dime
store, "Wheat's", had a wonderfully and kind "Granny" working for them. Her name was Thelma. She knew my Mom when she was a child and always remarked
on my resemblance of my Mom at that same age.
I bought MANY a penny candy in that store, assisted by the little wooden step stool, that lifted me high to see
the sweet, colorful assortment; Root beer Barrels, Wax Bottles/Lips & Teeth, Dubble or Bazooka Bubble Gum, Peanut Butter Logs, Jawbreakers and various
flavors of hard candy. Thelma was always there with a little paper sack, that I would fill to the top! She was always smiling & chewing a piece of gum
and could pop it while she talked.
I was really shy, but not with her. She tried to get me to pick different candies. But, my favorite were the BB
Bats. I didn't even know they were still made, until I found your website!!! Well, years later, the store closed and life went on in our small town. I
started dating the man I would end up marrying. Guess Who turned out to be his Grandma? Yes... sweet, ole, wonderful Thelma. ~ Michele from Florida
My grandmother was bedridden when I was a child. She would always tell my grandfather in their native language
to "give the children money" to buy candy. My brother and I would then go the Mom and Pop store across the street and buy BB Bats which were 2 for a
nickel. They were the highlight of our visits with our grandparents. It is one of the few memories I have of that grandmother who died when I was 5. ~
