Oh, how we couldn't wait for
Christmas morning! Every Christmas we would get barley pops in our
stockings! Shaped like boots, horses, and other shapes the taste was so
distinct! We would savor the flavor for the coming weeks as we slowly licked
the barley pops! Careful not to bite off too much because once the pops were
gone we has to wait a whole year to receive these wonderful treats again.
The best was the red and the others were just as delightful. Trading was
always a favorite way to get just the color you wanted. These memories have
never faded. My sister and I have been looking for them for years and now
thanks to the internet we can now share our joy of barley pops with our
kids! ~ Regina from Pennsylvania
Every December on a Sunday afternoon, my
dad's sportsmen's club had Santa there for the children. Now, this was not just
a sit on the knee, a candy cane, and off you go! We always looked so forward to
THIS Santa because we always received a huge treat bag! Popcorn balls, coloring
books and crayons, gum, candy canes, candy bars, chocolate foil-covered candy...
and, best of all, barley pops!
An additional story.... when I was three
years old, I was scalded. Hot water was spilled in to my lap. I was rushed to
the hospital and treated. This was 40 years ago, and I still have those scars.
As I've grown older and wiser, they no longer are something that I'm embarrassed
of or something to hide. They've become so much a part of who I am.
As a three year old, there's not a lot
that we remember, however, my memories of this event are vivid. Yes, there was
the pain, the smell of the medicine used, and visiting the doctor often. The
high note of the visits to the doctor? He always promised me a handful of barley
pops if I didn't cry! Don't know that tears were ever shed, because I remember
coming home with a constant supply of barley pops! ~ Beth from Pennsylvania
