Long Boys memories... I am 25
yrs old and whenever I get some quiet time think back to my child
hood. Every time I go into a store and see the Long Boys coconut candy
I remember when my older brother ( he is ten years older than me )
used to come back from school and hide behind the car and watch me and
my younger brother playing in the front yard with our toys.
And the one special time he scared us
and when we turned around and saw him he gave us some long boys candy.
I was probably about 5 or 6 years old then and that memory is sticking
with me for life. So every time I walk into a store and see the
coconut bar a little tiny feeling runs through my spine and makes me
wish for my childhood again with no worries and no problems and NO
Bills to pay. That's my story. ~ Kem from Florida
Back in the 80's, my
mom brought me to the corner store and would buy a $1 worth of candy
put into a small brown paper bag. She was the one who introduced this
odd tasting candy to me. I bit into one and began to chew, I liked it.
Even though there would be many candies to select from, but only one
caught my eye. It was in a yellow and red wrapper with a picture of a
boy on it. I finally found one candy that I would buy anytime I
received my allowance. Did I share? Nope!! I would always tell my
childhood friends you had to get your own Long Boys because I don't
share mine.
Time went by and somehow, the candy
couldn't be found. I went to gas stations and would ask about it, but
they didn't have them. I am 23 years old now. I went to a gas station
and at the counter was Long Boys. I bought $1 worth and placed it in a
small paper bag, just to bring back the memories. And still, they
taste the same. I now have a son and I gave him one. He loves them
too. Every time we go to a gas station and he spots them, he always
says "Mom, can we get some long boys?" I always get $1 worth just to
think back of the beautiful 80's. ~ Kellie from Louisiana
When I was in 10th grade, my friends and I would walk a half a block up to the local bakery at lunch
and fill up on penny candy. Coconut Long boys were my favorite because of their chewy stickiness. The coconut flavor was very sweet and
stayed with you for a long time.
The trick to eating a Long Boy was to take small bites and just savor the flavor. We used to twist our Long
Boys into a spiral and see how far we could stretch it. The BEST thing about a Long Boy is that it was the same color as your skin, so you could eat
one in class and the teacher would never catch you. ~ Lynn from Georgia
