Lollies memories... 28 years
ago when I was a kid in upstate New York, we had a little 5&10 shop
down on main street. It used to be the destination of choice for my
brother and I as we could tour the whole town via bicycle. Once we
were inside the 5&10, we were in HEAVEN. Penny candy and nickel candy
ruled most kids in those days, but my brother and I were hooked on
Lollies.
We made trips to that store in the afternoon, early evening, early
morning, any time of day that we had a few cents and thought we could
get some Lollies. In fact on one occasion, we bought the whole jar
with some money we make raking the worlds largest yard on the hottest
day of the year. Those Lollies never tasted so good.
I thought they were out of business forever, and now my kids think I'm
nuts when I talk about them. Boy are they gonna be surprised when I
actually get some. ~ Don from Georgia
As a little girl, I played on my softball team all summer long. After each game we would get a 25 cent
"ticket" to spend at the snack bar. I'd always save up for two games and then buy 5 Lollies and eat them one after another, until my tongue
was numb from all the sugar.
A couple years back, the snack shop stopped selling them and I've been looking for them all over [though not
knowing the name] and here they are. Makes me want to head out to the batting cages and eat suckers afterward. ~ Stephanie from Illinois
When I was a kid, there was a convenience store right across the street from my elementary school.
Boy, did the owner take advantage of his location - the place had one of the biggest candy displays I've ever seen - even to this day!
Every
single day after school (and sometimes before), I made a visit to blow the quarters my grandmother gave me to save in my piggy bank. I spent
just about every penny on Lollies. I loved how powdery they were - and how they'd change colors a bit when you licked them. I even loved to
chomp on the plastic stick after I'd chomped down all that sugar.
I thought Lollies had gone the way of the dodo and would have to remain
just a fond childhood memory...until I found your site! I just bought some to give to my 7 year-old nephew, who I'm sure has never had the
pleasure of eating one. I'm planning to buy a whole jar for myself, too! ~ Adrienne from California
