Jujubes history

Jujubes were first produced some time before 1920. The jujube is an edible berry that grows in the tropics. But the name of the berry has nothing to do with the make-up of the candy, which is more likely related to one of the basic ingredients of both Jujubes and Jujyfruits, ju-ju gum.

Jujyfruits were first made in 1920. Each box contains an assortment of fruit-shaped candy pieces. Both were originally made by the Heide Company which was started by German immigrant, Henry Heide in 1869. Today they are made by the Hershey Company.

Other candies originally made by Heide are Red Hot Dollars, Mexican Hats and Chocolate Babies.

Jujubes memories... I remember eating Jujubes in a dark theater on a Saturday afternoon. My bestest friend Renee and I would pool our money together and buy one box. During the show, we ate them... one at a time and rolled it around in our mouths until it was soft. We'd chew a little, taste some more and then tried to guess the flavor. Of course the only sure way to tell was to show it to each other to see if the color was right. We called it Chew and Show!! I still go to the movies with my bestest friend....and we still buy Jujubes, only now we each buy our own! ~ Donna from Ohio

In the early seventies, my father used to take me with him into a news stand and tobacconist's shop to buy his newspaper. I loved the smell of the tobacco and always got to choose some candy before we left. My choice every time was Jujubes. I haven't had them for years, and just seeing them on your website brings back the memory of that shop's old familiar old smell. I believe the shop was destroyed in the Loma Prieta earthquake. ~ Allison from Arizona

From the time I can remember going to the show with my brother most every Saturday in Long Beach, Ca. in the early 1940's I would buy Jujubes & he would buy Jujyfruits. We would try to make them last until the movie was over. It never happened even if we put only 1 or 2 in our mouth at one time.

I think the Jujubes & Jujyfruits were 5 cents a box so if we had 15 cents after paying 50 cents each to get into the show we bought a third box of Jujubes or Jujyfruits and shared. Those were truly the good old days. ~ Douglas from California

I was raised in Hollywood, Calfornia. My mom was a movie reviewer on radio KMPC and used to take me to movie premiers on the Boulevard 2 or 3 times a week from 1953 until 1959. Although I enjoyed Charms candy drops and the occasional Big Hunk, 9 times out of 10 I got a box of Jujubes.

Mom liked them because they would keep me occupied for most of the feature (we usually had 2 features, a cartoon and newsreel most of the time) and also it was not messy to eat. The flavors of Jujubes were also very neat. The grape and the lime were my very favorites because they tasted so rich in flavor.

If I was very good, and took out the trash or something else particularly good, mom would come home with a box of Jujubes as a treat. I kept them in my "secret cigar box" with my picture postcard collection, cowboy sheriff badge, and toy cars. ~ Christian from California
