"candy you ate as a kid" story?
Share it here.I grew up in Manhattan where my father owned a candy and nut shop. Early on in my childhood, he would roast his own nuts right in the shop. Later on, when he began selling preroasted nuts, he sold Indian brand pumpkin seeds and what was known then as Indian nuts. Today, these are called pine nuts.
I remember how great the salt tasted on the pumpkin seeds. It would become both an addiction and a challenge. I had a little competition going (although it was with myself) to see how many pumpkin seeds I could eat before my mouth dried out and I could no longer whistle. Day after day I would repeat the same challenge and each day it would take hours to rehydrate my mouth, usually with the assistance of some of the other candy on your list.Well, that was 41 years ago and many things have changed. Dad retired and passed on and so ended my own personal challenge. Now if only I could remember exactly how many Indian brand pumpkin seeds it took to render me "whistless." ~ Miriam from New York
