Goobers candy history

Goober, a southern word for peanut, made its way as a trademark for a product the Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate & Cocoa Company began manufacturing in 1925. The Blumenthal family had originated in North Carolina, and Goobers was a natural name for the milk chocolate-covered peanuts they began to make.

The Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate & Cocoa Company, started in 1911 in the Philadelphia area, manufactured its first candy product in 1922. It was called the Bob White, a large (2 1/2 inch in diameter) nonpareil. I the late 1920's, the size of the Bob White was reduced drastically to small, rounded wafers of chocolate covered with tine pellets of sugar. These were marketed under the trade name of Sno-Caps. In 1927, Raisinets, chocolate-covered raisins, were first sold.

Goobers memories... When I was about five or six, my parents took me to the park. It was a hot summer day, and we were on our way to my aunt's house. I was being pushed on one of the swings. I just loved the swings. All of a sudden, I fell of and bumped my head very hard on the pole holding up the swing. So the tears came flowing, and my mom went to our cooler to get some ice.

I had a huge bump on my forehead. Finally, my mom said she had some candy for me. I asked her what kind, and she said it was called Goobers. She gave me the package, and I happily ate them all. My mom said the Goobers made me feel better because they were magical! Of course, at that age I believed her. Unfortunately, to this day I have not been able to find a single package of Goobers in a store. ~ Lisa from Wisconsin

Sometimes during the summer months in the mid to late 60's when I was 8 or 9 years old if my brother and I had been very good all week, our parents would take us to the drive-in on Friday or Saturday night. Our town had 2 drive-ins. One was the Skyview and the other was the Goober.

We would take a picnic supper and after we had eaten all of our supper we were allowed to go to the concession stand to buy something for dessert. I could hardly wait to get my quarter so I could go buy a box of Goobers. Between the movies (it was always a double feature) we would go to the concession stand then down front to the swings. Ahhh! what memories! ~ Kay from Alabama
