"candy you ate as a kid" story?
Share it here.As a child in the early 70's, the highlight of my week would be grocery shopping day at the A&P. While my parents stocked up on food basics, I would do stocking up of my own at the store's bulk candy section. No matter how mesmerizing the other candies' shiny wrappers or temping aromas would be, I would always end up exclusively buying Goldberg's Peanut Chews. Samples were allowed at a penny a piece, and luckily, the grocers would look the other way and allow me to buy my candies by the penny instead of charging me the per pound price.
At that time they were sold in individually wrapped single pieces, so a quarter's worth of pennies would get me a huge amount. By the time we got home from our shopping trip, half of them would be gone. I would put the other half in an old wooden cigar box, and guard them like treasure the rest of the week.
For some reason, they seemed to fade away from the markets a few years later, and I had a very difficult time finding them; I continued keeping my eye out for them for years. The next time I found them, it was some 20-odd years later in a Woolworth's. I immediately bought three pounds worth. I must say old habits die hard-- again, after eating a ton of those scrumptious chews, I found myself hiding away what was left and jealously guarding them from everyone in the house! ~ Felicia from Illinois
