Bonomo's
Turkish Taffy History... Click here!
Memories... My mom is in her
fifties and just today asked me if I knew about Bonomo's Turkish
Taffy. I, being a 26-year-old person, had no idea what she was talking
about! She used to tell me that when she and her friends went to the
movies, all she would eat was the Taffy. Before the movie, she'd slam
the taffy against the seat's armrest and break it into tons of pieces.
She said it was better and easier to eat that way. She asked me to
find the candy for her, since she doesn't know how to use the
internet, and the closest thing I've found for her is the French
Chew Taffy in Vanilla. I am writing this for her as a secret, and I
would LOVE to win her a box of the taffy and surprise her! ~ Rachael

Bonomo's Turkish Taffy (chocolate) was my favorite treat as a school kid
in the late 50s/early 60s. Often times I would skip buying my lunch
milk, 3 cents a pint, and accumulate the needed five cents to purchase
the coveted chocolate Bonomo's Turkish Taffy bar.
Once purchased I would suck and stretch it so that it would thin and
become wire-like. I never cracked it against things but the approved
method was licking, sucking and pulling it so that it would eventually
CRACK! with a tasty snap. ~ Gloria from Massachusetts
As a kid growing up in the Bronx, we'd all go to
the candy store after a game of stickball to buy Bonomo's Turkish Taffy.
On the way home we would stop at an apartment building and all together
slap it up against the brick wall, careful that the super wasn't
watching. We would then go back to my house and sit on the front stoop,
mix it up and divi it out.
On hot days we would pair off and
each kid would grab an end and pull to see how far it would stretch
before breaking. Of course there was always one would be pull too hard
or far and would fall back, sometimes into an adult passing us. They
would laugh, too! We still laugh and talk about our favorite taffy when
we reminisce.
This holiday we are planning to
gather with our old neighborhood buddies and I am going to surprise them
with a huge assortment of candy from Old Time Candy. I am sure everyone
will go first for the new French Chew and see if it passes the Bonomo
test. Who knows, we may even go back to our old neighborhood for a game
of stickball. Of course we'd need to find a super's mop handle first!
Thanks for the memories! ~ Virginia from New York |
