Coconut Neapolitan Sundae memories... My story of Coconut
Neapolitans is something of a tragedy! In 1969, when I was eight
years-old, I was smitten with a pretty young classmate, Mary Ann. I
wasn't a shy boy in general, but, when I stood near smart,
red-haired Mary Ann, my heart fluttered much too quickly, and I
became mute and stared at my shoes.
My twelve year-old brother, Tom, also had a crush - Stephanie. He
spent an entire Saturday creating her a red and black gimp necklace
out of licorice strings and presented it to her for her birthday.
(He was so cool!)
A week later, when I saw them holding hands at recess, I
developed my grand romantic scheme. I loved coconut neapolitans -
the candy my Grandmother always presented to visiting children on a
silver dish. The next Saturday, I walked over to Grandmother's and
placed all her neapolitans in my lunch box. I took them home,
borrowed my Mother's sewing basket, and, created Mary Ann what I
believed to be a most beautiful pink and brown coconut neapolitan
necklace. I presented it to her at recess the next Monday - wrapped
in a little box. She looked at it in dismay - and, laughing, ran
over to her girlfriends to show them. She then threw it back at me -
and, they ran away. My heart was broken; my eyes filled with tears.
But, then, my best buddy, Johan, walked over and said: "Don't worry,
Peter; she's really not all that amazing. And, now we can eat the
candy"! We spent the rest of recess laughing and munching on our
favorite treat. ~ Peter from Pennsylvania
When I was a kid, my mom always used to buy a mixed bag of
Brach's candies whenever we made a trip to the grocery store (she
had a sweet tooth herself). She always let me, my brother and sister
pick out a few of our favorites. I always went for the Coconut
Neopolitan Sundaes. My brother and sister didn't like them, which
virtually guaranteed I would get them all to myself.
I still remember the somewhat tedious process of unwrapping them
(could be tricky at times because they were pretty sticky, but so
worth it!) But most of all I remember the particular way I would eat
them - usually nibbling off the pink end, then the white center and
leaving the chocolate part for last! Yummy coconut goodness! ~Chris
