I wasn't a shy boy in general, but, when I stood near smart, red-haired Mary Ann, my heart fluttered much too quickly, and I became mute and stared at my shoes.
My twelve year-old brother, Tom, also had a crush - Stephanie. He spent an entire Saturday creating her a red and black gimp necklace out of licorice strings and presented it to her for her birthday. (He was so cool!)
A week later, when I saw them holding hands at recess, I developed my grand romantic scheme. I loved coconut neapolitans - the candy my Grandmother always presented to visiting children on a silver dish. The next Saturday, I walked over to Grandmother's and placed all her neapolitans in my lunch box. I took them home, borrowed my Mother's sewing basket, and, created Mary Ann what I believed to be a most beautiful pink and brown coconut neapolitan necklace. I presented it to her at recess the next Monday - wrapped in a little box. She looked at it in dismay - and, laughing, ran over to her girlfriends to show them. She then threw it back at me - and, they ran away.
My heart was broken; my eyes filled with tears. But, then, my best buddy, Johan, walked over and said: "Don't worry, Peter; she's really not all that amazing. And, now we can eat the candy"! We spent the rest of recess laughing and munching on our favorite treat. ~ Peter from Pennsylvania
