Halloween History

Halloween is observed annually on the last day of October. It’s a holiday that celebrates frightening fantasies and scary stories featuring ghosts, witches, monsters, and all things that go bump in the night. Because of this, it’s no surprise it’s one of the most interesting holidays of the year.

Halloween CandyHalloween has its origins in the Catholic Church. The word comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1st, “All Hallows Day” also called, “All Saints Day,” is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints.

In the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31st. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New Year. The disembodied spirits of all those who have died throughout the year would return in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts also believed that all laws of space and time were suspended during this time which allowed the spirit world to intermingle with the living.

The “Trick or treat” tradition is innocent fun on the Halloween Day. It comes from the Catholic tradition of eating and giving soul cakes (small round cakes) on Halloween. The Jack-o-lantern comes from Irish folklore. Wearing costumes comes from the days when Celtic villagers would dress up in ghoulish costumes and paraded around noisily, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.

Why Do We Give Out Candy on Halloween?

The candy industry is the main source of inspiration behind the sweet tradition. It just so happened that the industry was searching for a fall holiday to promote around the same time parents were looking for an activity to keep their children less focused on the “trick” aspect of Halloween. In the late 1940s passing out treats was becoming more common and candy companies felt certain that the tradition was here to stay and started to heavily promote it. At first treats mainly consisted of nuts, coins, small toys, and homemade treats. But candy rapidly gained popularity do to its premade and prepackaged simplicity.
