"candy you ate as a kid" story?
Share it here.My mother raised 6 children by alone. In the 40s and 50s Mother had to work so, we had an elderly aunt as a babysitter. My aunt was prone to "tipping the bottle" (which she hid from my mother in the old coal stove). Tipping the bottle caused my aunt to take frequent naps during the day.
When my aunt fell asleep the 6 of us got into a lot of trouble. All of us loved Candy Buttons on the paper strips. Although, at that time we called them Bachelor Buttons, a name from the early 1900s. We would scour the neighborhood for empty drink bottles. When we found them, sometimes on someone's back porch, we would run to Sunset Grocery. The kind old elderly man with white hair would take the bottles in exchange for Bachelor Buttons. mmmmmmm good! ~ Dorothy from Indiana
