C. Howard Candy Company

Choward’s, also known as C. Howard Company, was founded by Charles Howard in 1934 in New York City. Known for its popular Choward’s Violets, this mint and gum company has been keeping mouths fresh for over 85 years.

Minty Fresh Flavors Made In New York

When Charles Howard started C. Howard Company, he had one goal: create a unique flavor candy that nobody in the world had ever tasted before.

This led to the inception of Choward’s Violet Mints. A combination of hard candy mixed with floral notes, this mint was packed full of flavor and freshened breath like no other mint on the market.

After slinging these sweets on the New York streets, Howard decided to dip his hand into gum, creating Choward’s Scented Gum. This sweet treat proved again to be a success, catapulting Choward’s into the mainstream of American culture. Following the gum, they continued to develop new mint flavors like spearmint, peppermint, and lemon—all of which were well received by consumers.

When Charles Howard passed away, he left Choward’s in the hands of long-time employee, Elizabeth Juhase, who would end up hiring Howard’s nephews to run the business and continue to do so today.

In 2010, Choward’s introduced its first new flavor in over 30 years, Guava. It was an immediate hit among consumers, cementing Choward’s as one of the most popular retro mint and gum companies in the modern candy market.

Today, you can find Choward’s mints and gum in mom-and-pop candy stores as well as online candy retailers including us here at OldTimeCandy.com!
