A Texas Tradition Turned Candy Company

Before Atkinson Candy Company was slinging sweets to people around the U.S. its founder, Basil E. Atkinson was making regular 12-mile trips to Houston. During these family drives, he would pick up tobacco and candy, then sell it to mom-and-pop stores on the return trip home.

In 1938, Mr. Atkinson decided to start making his own candy starting with peppermint sticks, peanut butter patties, and coconut haysticks. These candies exploded in popularity, leading to the purchase of Atkinson’s first manufacturing facility in Lufkin, TX.

During the 1950s, Atkinson Candy Company began producing one of their most popular candies to date: Chick-O-Sticks—which were originally called Chicken Bones. 30 years, later in 1983 Atkinson Candy Company purchased Judson Candy Company, known for making soft-centered candies like jelly beans, orange fruit slices, and marshmallow circus peanuts. This expansion put the confectionery company at the helm of candy production in Texas and bolstered their overall sales by 22%. Today, Atkinson Candy company continues to serve up some of the best candy on store shelves including Chick-O-Stick, Black Cow, Long Boys, Peanut Butter Bars, Slo-Poke, and Mary Jane.
