Big Hunk memories.... Big Hunk candy has always been a prevalent snack in my household. It is a testament to the love and devotion my parents have shared over the past 30 years. You see, my mother, in a desperate attempt to gain the attention of my evidently dashing father delicately dropped a Big Hunk candy wrapper in his path.

Always the gentleman, my father bent to pick up what she dropped only to be taken aback by the moniker, "Big Hunk." Not thinking the title had anything to do with him, he handed the wrapper to my coyly blushing mother. She knew just what she was doing and succeeded in gaining the attention of her very own Big Hunk. Thus, every anniversary a plate of Big Hunks rests on our kitchen table to celebrate their love. ~ Nancy from Ohio

The year was 1962 and I was eleven years old. My parents had been divorced for two years and my father and I were living in Los Angeles. My father had just remarried a lady from Ohio who had a 2 year old daughter and I was giving my her endless measures of grief. As she was only 22 years old, this was not difficult! The more she got frustrated, the happier I was.

At the grocery store one day, I was hounding her, asking for a "Big Hunk". I must have repeated it twenty times until FINALLY she yelled "A BIG HUNK OF WHAT???" !!!!! I've never forgotten it! ~ Karen from Nevada

When I was a child, I walked home from school everyday with my older siblings. Very rarely, we would have money to stop at the little mom & pop store to buy a treat. One of my very favorites was Big Hunk. Sometimes I would pick out the peanuts and eat the remaining nougat separate, but not while walking home because that would take too much concentration.

On one of the rare occasions, when I was in the first grade, I bought a big hunk. I was thoroughly enjoying it when I realized that the last little 'nut' I swallowed was actually a tooth - my first lost tooth! I told my sister what had happened, so she was my witness when I relayed the event to my mom. I didn't get any fairy tooth money, but I did enjoy my Big Hunk. ~ Corinne from California

Big Hunk candy history

Sam Altshuler, a Russian immigrant who arrived in the United States in 1917, founded Annabelle Candy Co., Inc., in 1950. He learned the art of candy making, and after years of perfecting his recipe, finally achieved success with his Rocky Road candy bar. He named his business the Annabelle Candy Company after his daughter, and began manufacturing Rocky Road in San Francisco. The item quickly gained popularity throughout the western United States where it has its strongest hold today, and is currently ranked highly among the top best selling chocolate bars on the West Coast.

In 1972, the Company purchased Golden Nugget Candy Company, of San Francisco, the makers of Big Hunk and Look candy bars, and began manufacturing those products. In 1978, Annabelle acquired of the Cardinet Candy Co., which manufactured U-No and Abba Zaba candy bars.

What started as a family business continues today as the one of the largest independently owned candy bar manufacturers in the United States, producing some of the most popular and traditional West Coast items available on the market today.
