Barley Pops

Barley Pops

We no longer carry this candy.

100 Grand bar history

More than one hundred years ago, barely sugar candy was developed as the purest form of crystal clear hard candy. The barley candy was made from hulled barley and water and as its popularity grew, the recipe was simplified without losing any of the unique flavor. Pure sugar was boiled to a high temperature, poured into unique molds and quickly cooled. The name remained the same because this candy retained the unusual crystal clear consistency and flavor of the original Barley Sugar Candy which originated in Europe.

The confection's fancy shapes are as vital to its flavor and charm as the taste itself. In order to achieve these appealing and intricate shapes, handmade molds had to be created and due to the time intensive task, the art of making the molds and barley candy has almost been lost. Fortunately, our supplier was able to recover these molds and using the time old recipe has been preparing these delicious treats for many years.

There is no comparison between the lollipops of today and barley sugar lollipops... they are in a class all by themselves!

Barley Pops memories... Growing up in New England, my siblings and I were taken to many a Revolutionary war monument, historical house or whaling museum for a "vacation." The high point for us kids at most of these sites was the gift shop, which was usually decked out like an old-fashioned general store.

None of our favorite regular candies here, but they always had a rack of barley pops. Only three colors, but so many shapes! Which to choose... Sailing ship? Witch? Pilgrim hat? Lobster? No matter--they all kept us quiet on the ride home! ~ Carolyn in California

I am so thrilled to see that you carry Barley Pops! When I was about 9 years old (30 years ago!) I boarded at a convent school and someone had donated a large box of these lollipops that we would get to choose from if we got a good grade or did extra chores, I always remembered they had a special tart flavor and sticky chewy texture that other candies never did.

It was pretty funny when my sister and I used to fight over the red bears (a favorite of both of us, and the other kids as well), but we tried not to be too obvious about this since this would cause the sisters to not allow us to have the treat! Many years later I tried to locate them but before the internet I was unsuccessful! ~ Anne from California

In our home it was not Christmas without Barley Pops. They were such a treat. The thought of those beautiful pops brings tearful memories of my childhood. We never had much as children but my Mom always treated us to these delicious pops. It was not Christmas if we didn't have Barley Pops and an orange in our stocking. I love those pops! What memories! ~ Melinda from Washington

I was so excited to see Barley Pops in the list of candy you sell. I remember my mother buying them for us at Christmas. I think she bought them from the local grocery store and I always thought they were made in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Dutch. I have been trying to find them for years and even thought about going to Pennsylvania to search for these delicious pops. I went to different candy websites and typed in "Lollipops" but none had these particular ones. Thank you for providing a most loved part of my childhood! ~ Lisa from New Jersey
