I grew up in a poor neighborhood with poor but thrifty parents. We didn't have a lot of money, but we were happy; us kids were raised on love and discipline. My parents, young but wise, would give us 30 cents a week allowances (a lot of money for a 7-year-old!)
Every Saturday, me and my dad would walk to the gas station 5 blocks away to go "get a treat!" Airheads were the only candy I could afford (at 17 cents a stick) that allowed me to save a nickel for the church offering the next day, and 8 cents for my piggy bank. I learned the benefit of long-term savings (more Airheads!), charity, and the importance of a treat every now and then... the most invaluable knowledge in my adult life. ~ Hailey from Minnesota
